    I've enjoyed your videos and the information you provide. I am however curious to know if you have needed to ask for a property release for the buildings you take pictures of? I am a bit puzzled about when it is and isn't necessary to ask a property owner to sign such a form. Any insights you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for all of the incredible education! Frequently, I capture amazing photos with my cell phone, which can pixelate if I enlarge them too big. Do you think there is any viability in trying to sell cell phone photos?

    • @scottfrenchart
      @scottfrenchart 6 днів тому

      Good question. Like the answer to a lot of questions, it depends. The latest iPhones are 48 mp so they have no problems with large prints. Older phones can still do a decent job up to about a 20 inch or sometimes even 24 inch print (you can upsize the resolution in Lightroom or with a 3rd party software). The vast majority of print sales are prints 20-24 inches or smaller so it shouldn’t be a problem. It will also depend on the individual photo. Some older phones have challenges with certain lighting situations. Hope that helps!

    The more apt question is why BUY any of it. There is so much free these days. Especially when its just deco art. Heck just have some AI make your perfect deco art, for far less cost at that. Now, High Art is a different matter.

    • @scottfrenchart
      @scottfrenchart Місяць тому

      I've worked with some photographers and artists and had many others reach out to me who've had concerns about AI's impact on their sales.. Most are worried about people using AI to create and sell cheap prints and downloads. I've also had some non-artists using AI contact me asking why no one wants to buy their cheap prints and downloads. So you might have something there. I suspect there are DIY'ers who are making AI art to hang on their wall. Before AI art became accessible, price sensitive buyers bought cheap mass-produced prints on Etsy or at Ikea. However, there's a middle ground between (low-priced) mass-produced art and (outrageously expensive) high art. This middle ground remains largely unaffected by DIY'ers or non-artists selling AI art. I think buyers in this category want something more unique when they purchase art. My own sales are up so far this year. I also know some artists who are selling AI art in this middle category. Then again, most of them were successful selling their work before they starting using AI.

    • @sword-and-shield
      @sword-and-shield Місяць тому

      @@scottfrenchart Of course that's what AI is going to do...be cheaper. Guess they have to step up their game to offer what the AI can't huh. Certainly wont be Photoshop pixel smears huh. High Art is, and will always be, determined by the consumer. Deco Art will always be deco art and at the whims of a dice roll. Digital photogs better get all they can, while they can, because AI will soon rule all of digital imaging, except for the extremely lucky here and there. I Never much liked smearing pixels on a computer, taking a photo vs just creating some image are very different, artistically. So I kept my darkroom chops up over the years, and can sell about 100% of what I print, when I do print, while not being online with any part of it, as well. They get the negative with the purchase, can see it was a taken photo, and they know its a one off hand made wet print that only THEY will have, outside of a one time opportunity for an enlargement wet print at purchase. AI wont have anything on me, I can produce what it can't. Why do they buy? I never ask why, but instead, just give them a reason to buy.

    I appreciate the in depth process you explained of your journey and what worked for you, however I think the limited editions and the FOMO you built your sales around will come back negatively which is why you hadn’t seen many sales after your grand opening initially. Building a following is about having a good relationship long term while these types of sales methods only makes the buyers feel worn out and unmotivated if they miss a product. This is a very controversial method in the video game industry at the moment so I would not recommend your method for beginners since it could easily ruin your reputation even before you start. Anyhow, still an interesting video

    • @scottfrenchart
      @scottfrenchart Місяць тому

      Thanks for sharing your opinion but I'd have to disagree. There is a reason most financially successful artists sell limited editions. It's because the number one driver of art sales is scarcity. In the 2 and a half years since my initial launch documented in the video, I've been able to grow my audience and sales dramatically, largely by building relationships with my collectors. I also know and have worked with many successful artists who have followed a similar path to mine. I have no idea how things work in the gaming industry but if you've sold a lot of art yourself by doing things differently, I'd love to hear about it.

    What about legal issues? How did you get property release for all these buildings?

    • @scottfrenchart
      @scottfrenchart Місяць тому

      There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. Here are 2 links to articles which discuss the law governing photographing buildings for commercial use: 1) wahaviblog.com/en/photographing-copyrighted-property#:~:text=As%20a%20general%20rule%2C%20you,the%20owner%20to%20sign%20it. 2) www.justia.com/intellectual-property/copyright/photos-of-buildings-and-architecture/ To summarize, while the law may vary from country to country, in general you can photograph a building from a public area (street, sidewalk, etc) for commercial use. However, if you are on private property, you need to complete a property release with the owner details, and also get the owner to sign it. Hope that clears things up.

    Camera gear is expensive so if you're only making a few thousand here and there it will at least help pay for your gear. If you're a hobbyist this would be a great way to support your hobby. You can even make enough to go on special trips to photograph places to sell more prints.

      @scottfrenchart I went to a small art gallery in my area that sells photos and paintings by local artists. I asked if they took new people often. She explained everything to me and I showed her some of my photos on my phone. After talking with her she said I seem to know what I'm talking about and my photos look good enough to her. She said I would need to bring in 5 prints for them to see but she thinks I would be approved. They keep $35% of the sales. I thought this would be a good start. I thought I'd anything this would lend some credibility to my work.

    I’ve thought about selling prints in person on the street. The online world is so over saturated, I figured people are more likely to buy something tangible that they can see in person. Set up a table in an area with high foot traffic in the city, I could imagine you’re likely to get a few sales. Do you have any advice or knowledge in this regard? Obviously you are limited to only selling locally in person and not worldwide online, I know it has drawbacks, but it could be a fun start

    I had an epiphany several years ago when I looked back at the art work from various time periods and realized that (and this is my observable opinion) that art and the architecture of the day tend to be married to each other to some degree. The art work of the Renaissance period looks good on the walls of the architecture of that period. While art from the art deco period looks good on walls from the architecture of that period and so on. I'm glad you hit on the importance how it has to look on a wall. I couldn't agree more.

    Hi Scott as a potential customer, what I’d like to know is what crop size or shape each piece of your art should be? I get to choose the actual overall size but you tell me the shape. You decide the paper grade and texture but I decide on the frame and where in my home it will go. Also how do you dispatch to overseas clients? It must be simpler to choose a print company in the customers country and then forward the photo data to that print company? There’s loads of photos from artists that I’d like to buy but I have no idea how to go about it!

    • @scottfrenchart
      @scottfrenchart Місяць тому

      As far as the shape (or aspect ratio) of each piece, it's really the artist's personal decision. I just recommend that it fits standard frame sizes. For example common aspect ratios such as 1x1, 2x3, 3x4, etc. make framing easier for the customer to purchase a ready made fram. When it comes to international shipping, the logistics can get complicated but yes it is easier to choose a print company in the customer's country.

I'll just take a camera along where I go and shoot things that interest me. My photos on Google maps have 70 million views. So I think I can take a picture people want to look at. Those are all taken with a cell phone. And certainly aren't fine art. My SLR seldom gets out of the backpack anymore. And I'm trying to get back in the groove. Hi Scott. Thanks for the video...2 qs, i have been a mostly residential real estate photographer for 20 years. i own all the images. would selling a photo of a nice set up from a private home be legal? second, i know a man who has many excellent landscape images from the sedona az area and others. would you suggest him getting started online by just posting images to see what response he gets, and if satisfactory, set up a website to sell them like you demonstrate? thanks again.

    • @scottfrenchart
      @scottfrenchart 2 місяці тому

      To answer to your first question, please keep in mind that I'm not a lawyer and not qualified to give legal advice. But in your case I think you would need a signed property release from the owner of the residence to legally sell the photo. Here are 2 links to articles which discuss the law governing photographing buildings for commercial use: 1) wahaviblog.com/en/photographing-copyrighted-property#:~:text=As%20a%20general%20rule%2C%20you,the%20owner%20to%20sign%20it. 2) www.justia.com/intellectual-property/copyright/photos-of-buildings-and-architecture/ While the law may vary from country to country, in general you can photograph a building from a public area (street, sidewalk, etc) for commercial use. However, if you are on private property, you need to complete a property release with the owner details, and also get the owner to sign it. If in doubt you should seek legal advice in your particular country. As far as your friend with the landscapes images, I think starting by posting them on instagram and then setting up a website is a good idea. That's how I started getting recognition for my work before selling it. Hope that helps!

    Has AI affected your sales? I imagine that with the ease of typing out exactly the photo you want & seconds later having it and it’s completely free, even for commercial use, that photography is one of the careers that stands to be phased out.

      I really have no idea if there’s been any impact. My sales have increased each year so it hard to say.

      @@scottfrenchart That’s good to hear. I’ve heard a few artists and photographers mention it, but I suppose it’s still a bit early to really determine. Thank you for the reply.

    Such a good video and nice to hear and watch someone on UA-cam who is really genuine. Some first rate advice ;-)
